Illuminating Our Future- Ending Street Light Vandalism

Illuminating Our Future- Ending Street Light Vandalism

In the heart of South Africa’s townships, a troubling trend continues to cast a shadow over daily life: the rampant vandalisation of street lights. Copper theft and deliberate destruction have left countless streets in darkness, compromising the safety and well-being of entire communities. Rihati Utility Services is calling for urgent action to address this pressing issue. Street lighting is far more than a convenience, it is a cornerstone of community safety. Well-illuminated areas deter criminal activities, significantly reducing incidents of robbery, assault, and gender-based violence. Lights enable safe travel at night, allow children to study and play, and support local businesses.

Without them, townships become vulnerable, with increased accidents and a pervasive sense of fear gripping residents. Proper lighting promotes dignity, economic activity, and peace of mind for families after sunset. Our young people must rise to the challenge. Instead of participating in or turning a blind eye to the destruction of public infrastructure, the youth should actively respect and safeguard these vital assets. Public property belongs to everyone; protecting street lights means investing in a safer tomorrow for their own families and communities. Vandalism does not solve problems – it creates more hardship for the very people it claims to represent.

Hopolang Mabaso, Rihati Group COO, stresses the importance of collective responsibility: “Educating our communities on the value of public infrastructure is fundamental. We must teach our young people to respect and protect rather than damage what serves us all. Strong private-public partnerships are equally vital, enabling efficient restoration and maintenance of lighting systems while fostering long-term community ownership.” Rihati Utility Services is dedicated to partnering with municipalities and residents to repair and upgrade lighting infrastructure. By working together through education and collaboration, we can restore light to our streets and hope to our townships.

Let us choose progress – together we can keep South Africa shining brightly.
